The Anamalais trip
Go here for a nice brief trip report and some fantastic photographs of my recent trip to Anamalais:
http://www.indiabirds.com/content/Article.asp?ID=103

Also, there's a very hilarious incident mentioned there of our encounter with a sloth bear. So, these 3 folks (kalyan, Vijay and Suraj) were sitting on the verandah of the rest house and I was standing below facing them. We were discussing some arcane stuff when suddenly Kalyan jumps up and runs towards me shouting loudly "Bear! Bear!" and since I couldn't see what was behind me the only thing that my brains could think of was "RUN!" and that's what I did - in the opposite direction of Kalyan. Anyways, the bear was scared by Kalyan's reaction and I could catch a glimpse of it running back into the forest when I realized there was no danger and turned around. All this happenend in just a couple of seconds!

It was a very interesting trip photography wise since all 4 of us shoot with Nikon, but none of us have a common lens! Vijay shoots with top-of-the-line Nikon D2X and Nikon 600mm f/4D. Kalyan and I use a Nikon D70, but Kalyan shoots with 70-200mm f2.8 VR and I use a 300mm f/4D. Suraj uses Nikon F90x with a 70-300mm ED lens (but he was not shooting on this trip).

Suraj is running a foundation (DiscoverWild) there to help the Anamalais and the trips he organises funds this foundataion. He's a hardcore nature lover and knows what hardcore nature lovers want and that's exactly how he plans the trips. He finalizing a week long trekking route through the Forests (Sholas!!!!) and that's going to be a super cool adventure.

Yeah, that's Vijay's website, so he'll put his pics and report there! :)

I'll try to put up my report and pics during the weekend. Too busy to even look at the snaps now. :(

Oops then I meant IndiaBirds. I really liked Sri Lanka Frogmouth - never seen anything like that even on TV.

See, how much folks miss out? They usually show only the things that are commercially good on TV.

the only thing that my brains could think of was "RUN!"

I was imagining this and laughing my guts off. Did you manage to shoot the bearing escaping back into the forest?
