Something we all miss in Bangalore ...
When I grew up in Bangalore, my house was also home to lots of sparrows and today we don't see many. It's a well known fact with naturalists and birders and they are all alarmed by the sudden loss of sparrows in the city. Most don't see them coming back and there have been a lot of theories as to why they are not around like loss of nesting places and even cell phone signals (!)

It was good to see as many sparrows as we did in Ooty and it took me back in time when I used spend evenings playing games in my courtyard while the sparrows chirped and flew around.

Even in Mangalore we don't see many sparrows now. My father-in-law has started placing some grain and water and now he gets a lot of them on his balcony.

I'm quite fond of the sparrow myself, we have quite a few that come to our balcony during the winter months to share in the seeds we put out for the great and blue tits and the nuthatches. They're such common sense little birds.

The first photograph is awesome. Everything about the photograph is perfect. Composing the sparrow to the left and throwing the branch to the right off focus. Brilliant.

and I agree ...
.... the photograph is brilliant. abolutely so. The thing with placing the subject off centre while having the branch out of focus ...

The second photo is beautiful; the sparrow with its beak open commanding a presence over the other one in the background with its head down and out of focus.

My thoughts exactly.

I saw a million sparrows on the drive to ooty recently. Don't remember having seen one in Bangalore in the last 5 years.

terrific!!! I loved the first one with that shade of blue in the background. my house was also home to lots of sparrows and today we don't see many.

You just put my thoughts here. And my high school was amidst the paddy and sugar cane farms and our school principal who was a naturalist too, used to take all the students for bird watching every sunday morning. Those were the days!!!
