The Art of Camouflage - part II
The jungle is full of amazing creatures of all shapes and sizes if you look for them carefully. The Draco is a master of Camouflage as I found out in one of my trips. During my recent trip to Bandipur I happened to photograph a Nightjar - a mostly nocturnal bird which nests and roosts on the ground. They are so well camouflaged that you usually see them only when they fly from their ground perch.

This particular species is a Grey Nightjar which nests on slopes of hills which have scrub. That means, in open areas and that also means invitation for a raptor (eagle/falcon/kestrel). The only protection against predation is camouflage and these birds are so confident that it works that they dont move unless one gets too close to them.

This image of the bird is kinda wide, so it's behind the cut.

Do you see something more than just the bird? I did'nt see it when I spotted the bird and positined myself to take the photograph.

Hey are you part of the bird watching community?

Well, of course. For every bird I photograph, I see some 20 others which I cannot photograph, so bird watching helps. :)

You don't have to miss them. Just try asking them to pose for you. They might be impressed with your car, camera or hair ;-)

The baby is within the mothers wing. I was far away since I did'nt want to disturb the mother and Harsha kept on telling me to look at the baby, but I did'nt see him at all till I looked at the photographs. :D

Looks can be decieving. A very nice bird in fact. In the jungles and even in the city outskirts you hear this bird all night making their territorial calls.

Well, all birds are better than humans. However, one bird I kinda dislike are crows, since they pester other birds and even dont allow them to nest.
