Point Reyes
2009 started with a trip to Point Reyes. It's an awesome place and I've had some good luck with wildlife sightings there. It was no different on new year's day - the elephant seals were back. There were a bunch of harbor seals in the water. The elks, the harriers and the coyotes showed up as well.

A starfish on the beach

The whining elephant seal.

He kept coming onshore and running straight back into the sea

Nice yawn

A portrait

And that's how his beach looks like.

And some elks showed up...

The Drakes Beach. Can you see another elephant seal on the beach?

A Northern Harrier on the lookout for a meal.

One of the three coyotes that patrolled the area...

And a red-winged blackbird to end the day...

Great photos!

I love the contrast of the red & black on the last photo. And it seems like that's a red puff of something that settled on the bird's back and not its wing.

And I love that first photo of the elk too.

What a nice haiku. It's wonderful especially in context with this photo essay, but even alone, it's a very nice ku.

I have spent a night or two at Point Reyes, back in the 70's. We used to camp there every once in a while while my brother was still alive we went clam digging there.

It brings back some great memories.

Wow. These photos are absolustely amazing. I love the angle of the sea star shot, but the elephant seals, then the elk....well, they are all wonderful.

Thank you so very much for posting them.
