So, a bunch of friends from work and I decided to head south on CA-1 towards Monterey and Big Sur. There was always time for birds and I did manage to photograph a few of them.

A second-winter Ring-billed Gull. Heermann's Gull. Thanks vijayr

California Ground Squirrel or Beechy Ground Squirrel.

A Brewers Blackbird on a beach

A Sanderling. They breed in the Arctic and migrate south during winters. Long distance migrants they are and their feeding habit is to run behind retreating waves to pick food - small crabs and others. This photograph shows a Sanderling running behind a wave...

They are rather gregarious and this is how they feed once a wave has gone back...

Really marvelous pictures, enjoyed very much!

The 4 and 5 reminded me of haiku by the great James W. Hackett:

The fleeing sandpipers
turn about suddenly
and chase back the sea!
