Not too far from my home! Yosimite is one of my favorite places. I remember floating down the Merced River on a raft with my twins when they were young, enjoying the waterfalls and granite monoliths all about us.

Once when we swam in the merced river I found a gold ring and thought of Bilbo Baggins. I call it my magic ring and still wear it every day.

You're really lucky to be living close to this wonderful place.

The Merced was flowing with ferocious force when I went there, so is there a season (probably when all the snow melts away?) when the river is much calmer to be able to swim and raft?

Simply awesome man. Good that you find the time to go around and share this with us. Just a little more time for you left in the US isn't it?

Well, it was supposed to be over a month ago, if not for a last minute change of plans.

super !! if only it had been a little cloudy .. nevertheless awesome images as usual :)

I think I should go there on an overcast day or when it's snowing. Hopefully, I can come back some day during it's winter.

Thank you Yathin. We visited Yosemite last October, but there wasn't this much water then...because of that, every place we visited (we spent 3 days there) looks different! Half-Dome,however, looks the same...magnificient! Your photographs brought back lovely memories of our holiday, as well as being wonderful pictures in themselves. My niece, who lives in Fresno, climbs the sheer face of some of these hills as a pastime, sometimes spending the nights on the rock-face..a thought that makes me giddy just thinking about it!

I heard about the rock climbers from folks here and it's a pretty interesting weekend adventure even though it so dangerous. However, I'd rather spend that energy hiking in those wonderful alpine forests. :D

no offence to your photography skills, i find the river totally gross. may be its the color.
Yathinyathin on June 19th, 2006 10:38 am (UTC)
No worries. Most mountain streams I have seen are beautiful shades of green like this one.

> The falls and the rapids look so ferocious

Yep, many people die each year underestimating the power of these waters.

Nice pictures. How did you achieve that effect on the rapids? Can you please share?
Yathinyathin on June 19th, 2006 10:35 am (UTC)
Get to manual mode and use the slowest possible shutter speed with the lowest aperture without over-exposing too much. That would give a nice flowing effect to the moving water. That's the basic idea but it also depends on how much of this smoothness you'd want in the water flow while thinking of the exposure settings. Thankfully, with digital cameras, we can experiment on the spot for a better picture.
