Dholes / Wild Dogs

I shot this one very late evening in Bandipur. Dholes are the only predators I've seen in Bandipur and I just loved this particular pack. These dogs will also be co-starring in a NGC documentary on Wild dogs, since the makers are following their activities very closely. The 3 dholes in the background are the oldies and the one in the foreground is the youngest one, who has just grown into an adult.

Dholes (also known as Indian Wild dogs) hunt in packs and are excellent killers. They are known to attack almost anything in the forest including tigers and leopards, but not elephants and surprisingly man! We watched these dogs for a good half hour and they were not bothered about our presence since we did'nt bother them.

Wild dogs have one matriarch and one patriarch. These are the only two that breed. All other adults remain childless until one of the heads dies.

Philipbluesmoon on April 6th, 2005 06:37 am (UTC)
Nat Geo, Discovery and Animal Planet are the only TV channels I watch.

Yep, I think they are called the alpha pair.
Philipbluesmoon on April 6th, 2005 06:37 am (UTC)

Dude, where is croc-land in Karnataka?
Yathinyathin on April 6th, 2005 12:12 am (UTC)
Ranganathitu. 10 km from Mysore. You can get within touching distance! Tell me when you're in Bangalore next, we could probably go there.
Deepakdeepix on April 6th, 2005 04:44 am (UTC)
Hey Yathin, why don't you take me too on one of your trips, man? I'm also as enthusiastic about wildlife photography as you, if not as talented? ;-)
Yathinyathin on April 6th, 2005 05:20 am (UTC)
Sure, pick the date ... I'm ready any day (even weekdays! ;-)
Deepakdeepix on April 6th, 2005 06:14 am (UTC)
Nah, I meant -you- taking me along when you go. :-p
Yathinyathin on April 6th, 2005 06:15 am (UTC)
hehe ... I go out every weekend, if not the big forests, at least birding within 100 km of Bangalore! ;)

human creation?
Like domesticated dogs are these a human creation, are they just pets that escaped and went wild again or are they an original species different from wolf.

I hear all domesticated dogs are merely selectively bred wolves.
Yathinyathin on April 6th, 2005 07:31 am (UTC)
Re: human creation?
Nopes, these are 100% wild with no human inteference. And these dont even mate with the local domesticated dogs from the surrounding villages.

Yathinyathin on April 24th, 2005 03:33 pm (UTC)
they are so beautiful. :D ... On this trip they were within 10 feet of our jeep and they just looked like the friendly dogs. :)
kruthikruthi on April 24th, 2005 05:17 pm (UTC)
lately i have developed fear for dogs :-( ...after i saw them coming in groups and hunting our so-very-much pampered cats with total brutality :-| .. unfortunately it has happened so many times that sight of dogs gives a slight jolt of fear :-(
but yes, friendly dogs are always welcome :-)

hi. Sorry for the late reply. I was in the forests for the last 10 days.

Dingos are pet dogs gone wild. Dhole (Cuon Alpinus) are 100% wild and have not been domesticated.
